Diploma in Contemporary
Music
The Diploma in Contemporary Music prepares you for a career in music or music-related industries, whether your musical background is in voice, playing an instrument, composing with computers, playing in a band or teaching music.
Throughout the diploma programme you will be exposed to the latest technology for music production and to a variety of musical styles and heritages, from Maori and Pacific to European and Afro-American music. Strengthen your musical understanding and widen your range of musical experiences. Develop your creative ability and work together with your fellow students on band or ensemble performances, composing new music and learning about music production.
Visits from well-known music practitioners will give you a chance to find out what a career in the music industry is really like. The programme is a mix of music labs in a dedicated Mac laboratory, group rehearsal tutorials and taught classes at a convenient, state-of-the-art venue in Henderson. You also have access to drop-in computer labs and a sound proof rehearsal space. Flexible study options give you the chance to combine part-time study with other demands such as work, business and family commitments. This two-year course begins in February each year.
Certificate in Music (
Introductory )
Do you spend all your time making music? Would you like to turn your hobby into a career? The Certificate in Music provides you with a range of fundamental music skills, offers opportunities for musical expression and creativity, and enables you to participate in practical music-making sessions. It prepares you for a role in the music and music-related industries, perhaps as a composer, music teacher, songwriter, sound artist or vocalist.
You’ll discover how to make and write music using computers and acoustic instruments. You’ll also develop a broad understanding of the cultural contexts of musical styles from Aotearoa/New Zealand and beyond. The Certificate in Music (Introductory) will also strengthen your learning skills in preparation for more advanced study in other areas. This one-semester course has a February intake and a July intake each year.
