The Māori broadcasting funding agency Te Reo Whakapuaki Irirangi, which operates as Te Māngai Pāho, has the primary function of promoting Māori language and Māori culture by making funds available for broadcasting, the production of programmes to be broadcast and archiving programmes.

Te Māngai Pāho is a Crown Entity funded by Parliament through Vote: Māori Development and is accountable for its conduct and performance to the Minister for Māori Development.

The core work of the agency is to manage over $55 million (GST exclusive) in funding contracts between the agency and various programme makers, producers, broadcasters and service providers.

As part of this work, Te Māngai Pāho manages a $0.4 million (plus GST) pool of contestable funding for the production of independently made Māori language music tracks and music videos for distribution to the iwi radio network. The iwi radio network administers a music strategy for the roll out of funded music tracks.

Te Māngai Pāho issues one RFP per year with applications invited through its website. It is anticipated that applications for music and video funding will open in March / April 2018.
