Waiteata Music Press is the largest publisher of music by New Zealand composers with more than 250 scores by 70 composers in its catalogue. In addition, Waiteata Music Press has released 13 CDs to match works in its publication catalogue.

Waiteata Music Press was established in 1967 by Douglas Lilburn at the School of Music, Victoria University (now Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music, NZSM). It was instituted as a non-profit ‘composer facility’ producing inexpensive editions of New Zealand music for performance and study. Composer and Associate Professor Jack Body took up the editorship in 1981 until 2012, passing the role on to NZSM lecturer and composer Michael Norris. While many of the early scores were originally published as facsimiles of composer manuscripts, most have now been computer-set. Sets of performance parts for selected chamber works are available for hire.

More than 70 composers are represented, spanning several generations from Douglas Lilburn, David Farquhar, Edwin Carr and Larry Pruden through to emerging figures such as Dylan Lardelli, Karlo Margetic, Miriama Young and Alexandra Hay.
The ‘Waiteata Collection of New Zealand Music’ CD series was launched in 1999 with ‘A Violin and Piano Recital’ (Mark Menzies and Dan Poynton) and has presented Composer Portraits of Ross Harris, Jack Body, Gillian Whitehead, John Rimmer and Jenny McLeod. There are now 13 CDs in the series.

Scores and CDs are available through Wai-te-ata Music Press at NZSM or through SOUNZ, the Centre for New Zealand Music.
